Shantiniketan likely to be included in the World Heritage List

Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s residence ‘Shantiniketan’ can be included in India’s global heritage sites. On Wednesday, Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy tweeted that on the birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Shantiniketan has been recommended for inclusion in the World Heritage List by ICOMOS, the advisory body of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

He said that this news furthers the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to showcase “our rich cultural heritage to the world”. Its formal announcement will be made at a meeting of the World Heritage Committee to be held in September 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Shantiniketan is also identified with the world-famous Visva Bharati University, where thousands of tourists from all over the world come every year. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), associated with the conservation of monuments, had sent a dossier in this regard to the United Nations in Paris.

Visva-Bharati is considered to be the symbol of synergy between modernity and traditions. It is also a symbol of harmony with nature, of upliftment of human and Indian knowledge tradition, and is viewed not merely as an educational institution, but a pilgrimage site for scores of teachers, students, art lovers and culture enthusiasts.
