India is now world’s most populous country: UN data

“We see India’s 1.4 billion people as 1.4 billion opportunities. India’s story is one of progress in education, public health & sanitation, economic development & technological advancements,” says Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative.

India’s population has grown by 1.56 per cent in the past year and is estimated to be 1,428,600,000 million (142.86 crore), and more than two-thirds of its population or 68 per cent includes people between the age group of 15 and 64, which is the working population, as per the latest edition of the UNFPA’s State of World Population (SOWP) report titled “8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities: the case for Rights and Choices”, which was released on 19 April 2023, Wednesday.

It also shows that China is just behind India with a population of 1,425.7 million or 142.57 crore. In 2022, it was estimated at 1,448.5 million or 144.85 crore. The United States is a distant third, with an estimated population of 340 million, the data showed.

India in report

According to the report’s 2022 edition, India’s population was 1406.6 million again, with 68 per cent in the 15-64 age group. The latest report also shows that India’s total fertility rate (births per woman in the reproductive age) is estimated at 2.0.

The average life expectancy for an Indian male stands at 71 and for females at 74, states the report which has been published annually since 1978. The report also states that 44 per cent of partnered women and girls in 68 reporting countries do not have the right to make informed decisions about their bodies when it comes to having sex, using contraception and seeking health care. An estimated 257 million women worldwide have an unmet need for safe, reliable contraception, it states.

The report calls for a radical rethink of how population numbers are framed, urging politicians and media to abandon overblown narratives about population booms and busts. “To build thriving and inclusive societies, regardless of population size, we must radically rethink how we talk about and plan for population change,” says UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem.
